Students: Learn The Value Of A Good College Internship

December 13th, 2009

When students look for new ways of gaining valuable work experience so that they are better prepared after college, many turn to internships and part-time jobs as a means to get their foot in the door. This is usually an excellent move, as students will learn a great deal about the business world and how business relationships are forged and maintained. Whatever field the student plans to enter upon graduation, having some background in business will always pay off.

First, the student should make sure that the college internship they are going for allows them to gain some actual experience. When the internship restricts the student’s ability to really learn something, it is almost a waste of time, other than possibly being a resume builder. Even so, when the interviewer talks to the student that had a useless internship, they will usually figure it out. So students should always make sure that they are not wasting their time. It is usually pretty easy to figure it out within the first few days, if they don?t figure it out by reading the job description. A college internship that is worthwhile will not underutilize their interns, but allow them to grow and develop their skills for the real world.

One sign that the internship is not going to be worth the time is when they list filing or data entry as a main duty. Spending the day entering data into a computer or filing papers will not benefit the student very much. It may give them a brief introduction to office life, but other than sitting in an office setting, they will not truly understand or get experience in how an office or the business world works. When the student is out talking to clients, dealing with accounts or keeping up with relationships, they will truly be making some headway into finding out what the real world may have in store for them. Companies that give students real opportunities to gain knowledge and experience that will help them later on in life are the best for students looking to get some exposure to the real world.

Having a college internship has other benefits as well. When the internship is paid and allows students to really make some money, they will gain a new financial freedom that they may have never been able to experience. This is especially useful in college, when money is sometimes hard to come by. Students who are stuck studying in their dorms all day rarely get the chance to make money. So when their internship gives them some real earning potential, they should jump on it and be thankful that they found it, as many internships do not offer much pay if they offer anything at all.

Students will also find getting away from their books for a few hours useful in clearing their mind. Getting off campus for a few hours will help them step out of the college world and enter the real world for a while. When they return to their dorm room, they may feel refreshed and ready to hit their books once again. Their grades may go up and they will find their college experience more enjoyable.
